Green Mountain Conservancy has scheduled a day of activities for the opening of our newest trail, the North Trail, The North Trail will join the join three existing trails at Deer Run Nature Preserve. There will be a guided hike to introduce this new route.

Where: 940 Camp Arden Road, Dummerston, VT
When: Saturday, September 16, 2023 at 9:30 am

The North Trail begins where the Shoulder Trail ends at a spectacular viewpoint looking north at the Grassy Brook Valley, northwest up the West River Valley, and looking down on the horse stables far below. After this vista the North Trail enters an oak-hop hornbeam savanna and zig zags through hemlock woods and passes jumbled boulders. Eventually, it emerges at the north end of 50 acres of floodplain fields, which the trail crosses to reach its end point on the West River. The total distance from the parking lot and back will be 7 miles with a vertical climb of 1500 feet. This is considered a rigorous hike for the energetic and will be led by the trail developer, Roger Haydock. Please bring water and a snack or sandwich.

The trail opening offers other less challenging options with naturalist leaders will be available as well for hikers of all interests and abilities. More information will be available soon. Come and enjoy the day.

The North Trail is the second to last addition needed to create a 7 mile loop trail at Deer Run. The final piece to complete that goal, called the Meadow Trail, will open in 2024.
